

Jim was born in Erick, OK on September 9, 1936 to Harry Robert and Ruth Louise McCampbell. Jim grew up in Erick and graduated high school in 1954. After high school, Jim attended Cameron University, where he played football. He finished his education at Oklahoma State University where he graduated with his Bachelor of Science in 1958. Jim served in the Air National Guard from 1959 – 1965.
Jim began his 40 year career with the United States Soil Conservation Service in Sayre, OK in 1960 as a Conservation Technician. Two years later he moved to Walters, OK where he was promoted to Soil Conservationist. While there, he met his wife of 57 years, Barbara J. (Lee) McCampbell. They were married February 10, 1963. The couple next moved to Hughes County; where they welcomed their daughter, Sheri (McCampbell) Vera into the world. The family then moved to Ada, OK, and finally settled in Norman, OK where Jim would serve as a District Soil Conservationist, until his retirement in January 2001.
Jim was very active in the community, serving as president of the Lions Club, as well as president of NARFE. He also helped establish the Tri City Gun Club. Jim was a Freemason, a Kiwanis member, and a member of McFarlin Memorial UMC.
Jim enjoyed competition shooting with black powder muzzle loading rifles, where he competed on a National level and he enjoyed racing radio controlled trucks with his grandson and watching all of the grandkid’s activities like gymnastics, tae kwon do, soccer, and all of their school programs.
Jim was a friendly man, who didn’t know a stranger, he could be ornery at times, but he was always there when you needed him. He loved his family and his grandchildren, and he was very proud of them.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Ruth Eskew.
Left to cherish his precious memory is his wife, Barbara J., his daughter Sheri and her husband John Vera of Norman, OK; his grandchildren James and Jennifer Vera of Norman, OK; his niece Jan Powell of Edmond, OK and her son Will and wife Taylor of Edmond, OK; his niece Julia Black of Oklahoma City, OK and her daughter Meredith and husband Blake Hamrick of Oklahoma City, OK; his niece Kathy Hines of Norman, OK; his brother-in-law Sam Hines of Norman, OK; as well as many other beloved family and friends.
