Jo Carolyn Balch Sloan was born on July 28, 1947, to Mildred Hayley and Lemuel Balch in Olney, Texas, and passed on Wednesday January 24, 2018 in Norman, Oklahoma. She attended Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where she met her husband and best friend Jerry Sloan. They were married June 4, 1968, in Wichita Falls. In January of 1977, they moved to Norman. Jo worked at Griffin Memorial Hospital for 35 years until her retirement in 2013. Many of her co-workers at GMH became close friends.
Jo is survived by Jerry and two loving and greatly loved children- daughter Tami Sloan Bart and husband Ryan of Norman and son Andrew Sloan and wife Christine of Norman. She leaves two beautiful granddaughters, Amica and Ranita Bart. Other surviving family members include sister Judy Balch of Iowa Park, Texas and brother Freddie Balch and wife Donna of Iowa Park, Texas. Jo also is survived by three nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, a maternal aunt of Wichita Falls, Texas, Hazel Hayley, and a brother in law Ed Carabenis. Her sweet cat Mimi passed in November of 2015 after being in the family 20 years. Two other greatly loved cats were Abigail and Logan. Her precious Yorkie, Lillie, died unexpectedly in May of 2016.
Jo enjoyed taking trips with her husband, spending time with her children, movies, reading mysteries and true crime, keeping up with current events and politics, and cooking. She treasured all the precious moments she spent with her family. She loved watching movies with Amica and Ranita-the scarier the better.
Jo became a follower of Christ at an early age and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She aspired to live by her favorite Bible verse, I Thessalonians 4:11, “make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, work hard with your hands, and mind your own business.” In lieu of flowers, donations to Norman’s Food and Shelter for Friends or Second Chance would greatly be appreciated by the family. To celebrate Jo’s life, dedicate to her memory an anonymous random act of kindness to someone who crosses your path.
Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday February 3, 2018 at Primrose Funeral Service Chapel, Norman, OK. Pastor Ken Huddleston will officiate.
