Joanne Rose Woods

Joanne R. Woods, died, Sunday, July 4, 2021 at her home in Norman, Oklahoma. She was born October 14, 1938 in Flint, Michigan to the late James and Jennie (Lawther) Marble. On June 20, 1959 she married the late Ronald J. Woods.

Graduated from Indiana University South Bend, with a Bachelors in Psychology. Former places of residence include Flint, MI; Royal Oak, MI; Saginaw, MI; York, PA; La Mesa, CA; South Bend, IN; El Cajon, CA; Tulsa, OK; Eden Prairie, MN; Englewood, CO; Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; Lansing, MI and Flint, MI before moving to Norman, OK in 2011.

A stranger to none and a friend to all. Joanne will be remembered as creative, curious and conversational. She applied her creative talents to gardening, needle work, oil painting, sculpture, quilting, stained glass, antiquing and whatever ignited her curiosity. Her wonder was evident and fueled her pursuit of joy by trying new things and having new experiences. She hiked, camped, fished and traveled with great anticipation and enthusiasm. Joanne loved a good “visit” with family, friends and strangers. Her constant favorite was a good story, one that delighted her listener with misadventures and laughter, best enjoyed over a cup of tea and a cookie.

Joanne was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Norman, attended Adult Sunday school, women’s bible study group and the healing service. She was involved in the Senior Center of Norman, swam at the YWCA, enjoyed walking in Sutton Wilderness Park and visiting with her friends and neighbors.

Survivors include five children: Juliet (Brian) Fischer of Knoxville, TN, Lisa Curran of St. Louis, MO, Anthony Woods of Sydney, Australia, Nicholas (Becky Ross) Woods of Columbus, OH and Jennifer (Todd) Swearingen of Norman, OK; eleven grandchildren: Nathaniel Fischer, Jeannine Fischer, Mackenzie Curran, Nicholas Curran, Benjamin Woods, Nastassja Woods, Jamieson Woods, Alysja Woods, Sydney Swearingen, Blake Swearingen and Samantha Woods; sister Melanie (William) Menosky of Davison, MI and five nephews and one niece: Jeffrey (Charlene) Menosky, Mark (Wendy) Menosky, David (Shelley) Menosky, Paul (Heather) Menosky, Michael Allein and Michelle (Tom) Allein Schmidt.

Preceded in death in 2001 by husband of 42 years Ronald Woods of Lansing, MI and in 2021 of loving partner (Duane) Al Jans of Norman, OK.

Memorial service to be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2021 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Norman with the Rev. James Detrich officiating. A remembrance ceremony will follow in the church scattering garden.
