John Russell, age 64, of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away on September 9th, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born February 8th, 1961, in Norman, Oklahoma, to James Louis and Clara Ann Russell, John lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and a love for his family and community.
A proud 1979 graduate of Norman High School, John spent his entire life in Oklahoma, where he established himself as a respected tradesman and builder. His work ethic and skills in auto mechanics, welding, and construction were passed down to his sons, who he taught the value of a job well done and taking pride in one's work. John was part of the Russell family legacy of builders, contributing to the construction of several notable buildings in the area, including the First United Bank on 12th Ave NE in Norman, the Oklahoma City Thunder practice facility, the OU Tennis Pavilion, the CLEET Center in Ada, the Bar-K Dog Park in the Boathouse District, and numerous school remodels across Edmond, Norman, and Oklahoma City.
John’s perfect day was spent outdoors—whether it was riding the sand dunes or trails of Arkansas in his Polaris Razor, fishing the river with his best friends, or simply relaxing at home with his granddaughter Ember (affectionately known as "Biscuit") sitting in his lap. He was an avid listener of The Sports Animal, and his favorite musicians, Conway Twitty and Johnny Paycheck, provided the soundtrack to his life.
John is survived by the love of his life, Teresa Brumley, his first wife of 19 years, Annette Richter, his sons: John Wesley Russell and Jacob Russell (and his wife, Sonya), grandsons: Jacob and Eli Petty, and granddaughter: Ember Russell. He is also survived by his brother Rick Russell (and his wife, Shannon), and his sisters: Kathy Brewer and Jane Alexander (and her husband, Gene). John was preceded in death by his parents, James Louis and Clara Ann Russell, his brother James Russell, and his grandson Shiloh Russell.
John’s legacy will live on through his family, his work, and the countless lives he touched throughout his years. He will be dearly missed, but his memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in John’s memory.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
