He worked at Warehouse Market before starting a successful 50-year career in the wine and spirits industry. He retired in 2013. He never met a stranger, and everyone he met became his friend. He was a generous man whose words were always kind. He was proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
John was an avid sports fan. He loved playing golf and coaching his sons’ baseball teams. He may have been the University of Oklahoma’s most dedicated sports fan. He never missed a football kickoff or a women’s softball first pitch. He proudly displayed in his “OU room” all the Sooners memorabilia he collected over the years.
John supported many worthy charities including Relay for Life, Sip for Sight, The American Cancer Society and organizations supporting American’s veterans. He attended Generations Church, Norman, OK.
The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Ayers and Loving Care In Home Health Services for the care and compassion provided to John.

Johnny was a true original and one of the kindest men in our industry. He loved his work and could work circles around those half his age in mornings spent at Byron's. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all who met him. I can still hear him saying "Hey baby....." a phrase he used for pretty much everyone! He did so much for so many in a quiet way & always with his signature ornery smile & twinkle in his eye. I was proud to be his co-worker but even prouder to have been his friend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dawn and his family.

We want to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of Papa John. We fell in love with him when first met, although he did not share our love with Box wine. He will be missed very much, great guy. I got more to go to Heaven for than we had yesterday. This glass is for you Papa John. Love you Tina and Dawn.

I am sending my most sincere condolences to Johnny’s family and to his wife, Dawn. He was a true ambassador for Banfi wines. I don’t know if the folks at Banfi ever realized just how valuable an employee he was for them, or to what extent folks bought Banfi wines just because he recommended and represented them!
Johnny was always happy to share his wines and educate all of us “newbies” in the wine
business. He was generous to a fault and made everyone feel like a friend. I will miss his laugh and his kind heart—what a loss to us all, but to his family, most especially! I am so sorry!

A wonderful person, friend and role model to many young people in the Oklahoma wines and spirits business.
I will miss that smile and infectious laugh!
He will be missed by many.
My love to Dawn and sincerest condolences to his family.
