

Lena Elizabeth Johnson was born January 18, 1925 in Cleveland County, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Frank D. Bernard and Bessie White Bernard. She grew up on a small farm house located on the bank of Hog Creek which is now under Lake Thunderbird. Her mother died when she was 5 weeks old. Her father took her to her grandmother Lena Emma Bernard and she raised her until she turned 13, then she moved in with her father and step-mom Ruth McMichael Bernard a local school teacher. Lena and her step-mother traveled quite a bit since her father worked for the railroad and they got free travel passes. Her first job was at Blue Moon Café on East Main Street in Norman. Lena graduated from Norman High school in 1942. In 1945 she took the Oklahoma Clerical Test and passed it with flying colors. She went to work for a Norman attorney Ben Huey for several years until he retired. She then went to work for the city of Norman collecting delinquent water bills. She was then promoted to assistant city clerk in the department, where she worked for 12 years. Lena worked 34 years at the Postal Training Center. She retired at the age of 79. She was a charter member of the Postal Center Bowling League. She traveled on many charter gambling trips. She began attending Full Circle Senior Citizens February 4, 2008 for 8 years. Lena’s health started failing and her family could no longer care for her at home. Lena moved into a nursing home in February of 2016.

She is survived by her two daughters; Cindy Gage and husband Walt, and Susan Yeutter, her grandchildren; Frank and Lisa Waggoner, Shelley Vann Gage, Mical and Tim Abernathy, her great-grandchildren; Paige Waggoner and fiancé Seth Mutz, Dakota Waggoner, Ben Abernathy, Sam Abernathy, and great-great-grandchildren; Cayden and Lucas Mutz, and numerous cousins
