Dr. Margaret Ann Smith

Dr. Margaret Ann Smith, died Thursday, February 18, 2021, at the age of 73. She was hospitalized with diabetic complications. After being released to a recovery center, Margaret caught Covid-19, soon after beating Covid she succumbed to “covid-heart” and died from a heart attack.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents AnnaBelle (nee Murry) and Vernon “Buzz” Smith. Survivors include Margaret’s many beloved family and friends. Her sisters B.L. “Susie” and Carol, Carol’s spouse Jerry, their children: nephew David and his spouse Elizabeth, their children Emilie and Madeline; nephew Patrick and his spouse Lesley, their children Alexander and Calliope; niece Kimberly and her spouse Michael.

Brother David V. and spouse Cheri, their children: nephew Grant, spouse Laura, children Grant II, Harrison and Elowen; niece Lauren, spouse Eric, children Michael and Maren; niece Morgan, spouse Tim, children Shepard and Clyde. Cousins Margaret Reidt, Dwayne, Keith, Greg, Michael and Karen.

Margaret received her Bachelor of Science in Art Education from East Central State College and furthered her education at the University of Oklahoma where she received her Master’s Degree in Educational Media in 1978. She then started working for the University while continuing her education. She earned her Ph.D. in Instructional Technology in 2000. Dr. Smith was an employee of the University of Oklahoma for 37 years until she retired in 2014. During her time at OU she received may accolades for her job performance and managerial skills. Many of the students she mentored became lifelong friends.

Margaret loved teaching and educating others which showed through her everyday interactions and the organizations in which she participated. Some of those organizations included: OU Big Red Computer Club, Oklahoma Native American Basketweavers Association, Basket Weavers Guild of Oklahoma, International Visual Literacy Association, University Women’s Association, American Indian Student Association (served on the council), Jacobson House (won first prize in contemporary basket weaving representing The Choctaw Nation 2007 and was artist in residence that year). She shared her love of basket weaving by teaching the children’s arts area of the Red Earth Arts Festival and at the State Fair of Oklahoma.

At any event, you would be hard pressed to catch her without her camera taking some of the most beautiful photos. She delighted in going to the movies with Roxanne and going to the many Weavers Weekends to weave baskets with her sisters and reconnect with her friends. She enjoyed going out to eat with her friends including Earl and Summer, Steve, Cathy, Michelle, Debi, Kelly, Angela, the UWA lunch bunch and many others.

It doesn’t matter if you, Dear Friends, talked to Margaret last month or ten years ago, her love for you is forever with you to warm your memories.

Viewing will be held at Primrose Funeral Service Monday – Thursday March 1st-4th 8am-8pm. Viewing with the family will be Tuesday from 3pm-6pm. Interment is 1:50pm, Friday, February 5, at Pryor Cemetery near Stuart.
