Marilyn Sue Hill (Mare) was born in the early hours of October 10, 1960. As a child she loved dressing up her animals and pushing them in a baby carriage. She enjoyed being outside, surrounded by nature and animals. She was a precocious child and up for anything. She made friends easily and made others feel at ease. She graduated from Noble High School in 1978.
Mare met Tommy Carter while waitressing at Applegates Landing restaurant. She immediately disliked him but he eventually he won her over. Mare and Tommy married August 8, 1981. Lauryn was born in 1985 and Matthew in 1987.
An avid gardener, Mare was a part of many Norman gardening clubs. She loved spring and summer and visiting local nurseries for exotic and beautiful flowers or plants. She had a green thumb and could revive any plant. Volunteering and giving back to her community were always important to Mare. She volunteered at her children’s school, Lauryn’s sorority and Matt’s sporting events. She volunteered at multiple animal rescue agencies and would happily help at a soup kitchen or shelter.
Tommy and Mare enjoyed OU football games, listening to classic rock, watching Thunder games and playing with their dogs. Mare often visited Dallas to see Matt and enjoy the local vegetarian food. She loved shopping for clothes for her grandchildren and often took her beloved chihuahua Ralph with her. She was unable to see a dog without petting it.
Mare was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. She was declared cancer free in 2003. The cancer came back in 2016 and she was also eventually diagnosed with leukemia. Mare was a wonderful patient; kind, considerate and upbeat no matter how ill she felt. She was adored by nurses and doctors alike. Mare was never defined by her sickness, but instead continued to spend time with her grandchildren, Maximilian and Georgia, work for her business and make time for her many friends.
Mare went to be with her Savior April 7, 2026. She is greatly missed by her pets, family and friends. She is remembered as a generous woman who remained strong and positive no matter what her circumstances were. She continues to be an example of a beautiful woman who treated all living things with kindness and respect.
Mare is survived by her mother, Margorie, her husband, Tommy, her daughter, Lauryn, Lauryn’s husband, Christopher, her son, Matt and her two grandchildren, Maximilian and Georgia.
