

Martha L. Hackney, 87, Piedmont, OK, born February 9, 1939, in Norman, OK to William Raymond and Doris L. Brendle. Martha attended Norman Public Schools and graduated from Norman High School in 1957 and was an active member of the Assemblies of God Church in Norman.
Martha began her long career in the funeral industry at Primrose Funeral Home, Norman, OK, in 1960 where she met her husband, D. Ray Hackney. Martha received her first funeral director’s license working at Primrose Funeral Home for Odies Primrose in 1962. Ray and Martha were married in Norman, OK on November 10, 1963. While living in Norman, Ray and Martha had two children, Lisa Hackney Hernandez, and Justin Haze Hackney.
In 1973, Ray and Martha moved the family to Kingfisher, Ok and began the Langley-Hackney Funeral Home, and in 1978 they relocated the family to Hobart, Ok. In Hobart, Ray and Martha ran the Stanley Furniture and Gift store where Martha was able to put her very creative talents to use. In 1979 Ray and Martha opened Hackney Funeral Home in Hobart , later known as Ray and Martha’s Funeral Home, where Martha continued her long career as a funeral director.
In additional to her career as a funeral director, Martha had many creative talents at which she excelled. She was an exceptional seamstress, able to sew almost anything. She was a talented oil painter and taught oil painting classes for many years, and Martha was an incredible cook. In 1975 Martha won the Governor’s Cookie Jar Prize at the State Fair of Oklahoma resulting her presenting the cookie jar she had painted with a bi-centennial theme and filled with the nine different types of cookies, to the then governor of Oklahoma, David Boren. Then again in 2019 Martha won the prize as the Grand Champion pie baker at the Oklahoma State Fair.
