

She grew up in the small farming town of Jesup, helping her father in his drug store until she graduated from high school. She attended Clark College for two years, finishing her education at the University of Northern Iowa. She received a BA in Education. She met her love and life mate her senior year and married Billy L. Johnson June 9, 1962. They started their life together in Golden, Colorado, Mary teaching in the Jefferson County school system. They welcomed their first child, Camille, in 1964 and Mary became a fulltime homemaker. A son, Michael was born in 1967 completing the family. The family moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1969 and resided there until moving to Norman in October of 1977. Mary was a devoted mother and homemaker with many talents. She loved stitchery crafts; cross stitch, embroidery, crewel, garment sewing and most of all quilting. She visited quilt shops in Oregan, New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Oklahoma. She made many quilts for family and friends.
Mary was a Girl Scout in her youth and continued scouting in Carolina receiving a 20 year service pin. She was a proud member of the “DAR” Daughters of the American Revolution, the “DUV” Daughters of Union Veterans, the “Colonial Dames,” the Norman Quilt Guild and two small quilt groups, the “Wild Women” and the “Shady Ladies.” Mary loved sports and especially the Oklahoma Football Sooners, the North Carolina basketball “Tar Heels” and Oakland Raiders.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bill; a sister, Judy Hansis of Ft. Collins, CO; a brother, Martin Soy of Bakersfield, CA; a daughter, Camille Petschauer of Highlands Ranch, CO; a son, Michael Johnson of Mustang, OK; grandsons, Ryan and Daniel Petschauer of Highland s Ranch, CO.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 8 at 2:00 PM at Primrose Funeral Service. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations in Mary’s name be made to the American Cancer Society.
