OBITUARY

Mavis Virginia Beavers

October 1, 1935November 14, 2020

Mavis Virginia Beavers, 85, passed into eternal life on November 14, 2020. Mavis was born on October 1, 1935 in Picayune, MS to Edward D. and Mignon Courtney, being the second of four children and the only daughter. She married Rex L. Beavers in 1958, and to this union a daughter, Kay Suzette, was born in 1959.

Mavis lived a life of caring for others. She earned her Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Houston in 1970. For many years she worked for the Texas Department of Human Services as a welfare case manager, ultimately rising to the role of supervisor in the Houston and Harris County area. It was a responsibility she gladly accepted and she was always proud of the service she provided to those whose lives she improved.

Her passion for caring extended everywhere. When her own mother's health began failing, Mavis took care of her. When her mother- and father-in-law's health also failed, she and Rex were there again. Upon moving to Norman to be closer to her daughter, she immediately stepped in and began working in the Thrift Store for the First Presbyterian Church. She continued working for the women's group in that role for many years, and other volunteer activities with the church, as long as she was able.

And then there were her cats. Brownie, Sassy, Mrs. Kitty, and many others .... no house cat or neighborhood cat had a better human friend to feed them, watch out for them, take care of them, or just reach down and give them a good petting.

What Mavis taught others in how she lived her life of caring is immeasurable and invaluable. Though her beautiful life light has been extinguished, we know it will shine forever in our hearts and in our actions. Left to cherish that light are her husband Rex, daughter Dr. Kay S. Beavers and her husband Dr. Kevin Haney, brother Earl Courtney and his wife Jean, brother and sister and law Dr. Jay and Millie Beavers, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Remembering my Aunt Mavis who loved us Courtney boys ( even when we were bad) and had the best box of toys for us to play with at her house in Texas.

Love you and will always remember you
and how much you loved your kitty cats.

Tim
