

Merle Meigs Rains, beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, at the age of 95. She was born on January 12, 1930, in Cole, Oklahoma, to Howard Meigs and Bertha (White) Meigs, and spent a long and full life grounded in family, faith, and quiet strength.
Merle earned her high school diploma and later began a rewarding 25-year career as a telephone operator, a role in which she was known for her steady voice, patience, and dedication. In a time when every connection was made by hand, Merle helped keep people in touch with one another—one call at a time.
Her days were filled with the simple joys she loved most: reading the newspaper, sewing with care, working word puzzles, and the occasional trip to the store. Her favorite color, red, reflected her vibrant spirit and warm heart. To those who knew her, Merle’s perfect day was quiet, meaningful, and filled with purpose.
Merle was deeply devoted to her family and friends, cherishing the relationships that gave her life so much joy. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bernice Isaac Shea, October 22, 1978, and her second husband, James C. “Slim” Rains, December 28, 1993.
She was also preceded in death by her parents Howard Meigs and Bertha (White) Meigs, and brothers, Frank B. Meigs and Earl Lee Meigs. Merle is survived by her loving sister, Evelyn Jo Meigs Barnett, of La Habra, California, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will forever remember her kindness, strength, and unwavering presence.
Merle’s life was one of quiet purpose and lasting impact. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A funeral service for Merle will be held Monday, August 25, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 North Porter Ave, Norman, OK 73071.
