Born in Ransom, Kansas, to Helen Lucile (Ochs) Klein and Victor Alexander Klein, Michael spent his childhood and adolescence in Ness City. The family moved to Liberal, Kansas in 1963 where he graduated high school and married his high school sweetheart, Dianne. His passion for design led him to Goodland Area Vo-Tech, where he earned his Drafting Certification. He then continued his studies in Civil Engineering at the University of Kansas and the University of New Mexico.
Michael’s engineering career spanned impressive milestones—from designing interstate overpasses at Howard Needles Tammen and Bergendolf in Kansas City to crafting aircraft instrument panels at Beech Aircraft in Liberal, Kansas. In Albuquerque, he worked with D.F. Moltzen, shaping the city’s infrastructure through innovative paving district designs for water, sanitary sewer, and storm runoff systems.
Returning to Kansas, Michael pursued his dream of designing homes, founding Michael Klein Designs Custom Homes. But the rugged beauty of New Mexico’s mountains and desert terrain called him back. He settled in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains, leaving his creative mark through KEK Construction of his custom home designs that stand as a testament to his vision.
Michael’s talents extended far beyond architecture. As a skilled silversmith (MK Silversmith), he crafted stunning pieces that reflected his artistry. He was also an incredible harmonica blues musician. He shared the stage with legends like Albert King, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Asleep at the Wheel. His musical journey even led him to the Blue Bird stage in Nashville, where he continued to share his gift.
An adventurer at heart, Michael was an avid big-game hunter. He traveled as far as Africa, collecting trophies that told stories of his pursuits. His determination knew no bounds. Having survived a tragic spinal cord injury at the age of 33 that left him a paraplegic, his ability to overcome the impossible was 45 years in the making. More important than any hunting trophy was his advocation for the handicap community. He was able to champion lifetime hunting permits for disabled sportsmen that allowed them to enter and hunt in state and national parks. He was also personally responsible for changing New Mexico law to allow individuals with disabilities to obtain motorcycle licenses. His personal obligation to fight for others was empowering to many.
Yet above all, Michael’s greatest passion was his love for Jesus. As a devoted member of Triple Cross Riders and Promise Keepers, he shared his faith openly. He touched countless lives and inspired those around him with his unwavering devotion. His faith not only shaped his journey, but also transformed the lives of many who crossed his path.
Michael is survived by his former wife and best friend, Dianne Patterson Klein and their son Jason Klein and wife Tracy, granddaughters Katie and Maddie Klein; his daughter Terah Devine and husband Joe, grandson Hayes and granddaughter Kendall Devine; and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Vicki Ohlemeier and husband Denny, Sue Schuckman and husband Maynard, and his brother Mark Klein and wife Kimberly. His nieces and nephews include Scott and Brad Ohlemeier, Dalon and Darin Schuckman, Bryant and Brent Klein, Britt Jones, and Braden Wilson. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Helen Klein.
A celebration of his remarkable life will be held on February 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Goldsby Community Center.
