Muriel graduated with the Class of 1955 from Choctaw High School, where she was a cheerleader and played basketball. During her high school years, she met Odus Hill at the skating rink. They were married on January 21, 1955, at her parents’ home, and shortly thereafter Odus left for military service in the U.S. Marines.
Throughout her life, Muriel made her home in many Oklahoma communities, building a life marked by steady devotion to family and a strong sense of responsibility. She lived in Midwest City until 1964, then in Meeker from 1964 to 1970, returned to Midwest City from 1970 to 1981, moved to Norman from 1981 to 2006, lived in Eufaula from 2006 to 2022, and then returned to Norman from 2022 to the present.
Muriel dedicated 35 years of professional service as a Gas Contracts Manager with Texas Oil and Gas, which later merged with Marathon Oil Company, retiring after a long and respected career.
Above all else, Muriel was blessed to be the mother of three children Kimberly Deene, Jim Ray, and Leslie Neel. She took an active role in their activities, and her home was known as a welcoming place where others were always received with warmth. Her grandchildren and great grand kids lovingly called her “Big Grandma,” a name that reflected both the size of her heart and the steady presence she held in their lives.
Muriel’s enjoyment of life was evident in the things she loved. She was an avid fisherman who owned her own boat and treasured time on the water at Lake Texoma, Lake Thunderbird, and Lake Eufaula. She enjoyed 50’s Rock and Roll and country music, and she followed OU Women’s basketball, OU football, and NASCAR. She also valued travel and, most of all, time spent with family.
Muriel’s legacy is also found in the values she consistently taught and modeled—responsibility, independence, kindness, good manners, hard work, strong work ethic, respect, and the importance of being a good parent. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and was active at Oakridge Baptist Church in Eufaula, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for children.
Muriel is survived by her daughter Kimberly Deene Estell and husband Bill; son Jim Ray Hill and wife Jennifer; daughter Leslie Neel Dukes and husband Donald; 10 grandchildren Jeff McGraw and wife Jill, Shelby Combs, Nick Estell, Jessica Erwin and husband Craig, Jacob Hill and wife Kelsey, Jared Hill and partner Cera Perez; Madison Hill, Bo Baxter and wife Courtney, Brooklyn Butler, and Jillian Langdon and partner Jeremy Buhl; nine great grandchildren Parker, Jansen, Olivia, Brayden, Lily, Everleigh, Logan, Jaxton, and Harlow; sister Melva Buckhanon; brother Johnny Landers and wife Mary Ann; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly.
