

Peter Richard Caldwell, 73, passed away Saturday, August 20, following a long illness. He was born June 22, 1938, in Topeka, Kansas, to Peter Francis Caldwell and Elizabeth Sherlock Thomas Caldwell. He earned a BA in French from Washburn University in 1961; he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study French literature at the Université de Montpellier; he earned an MA in French from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in French linguistics from Cornell University. After teaching French in Oregon and Vermont for a number of years, in 1976 he became Associate Director of the Oklahoma Foundation for the Humanities, a position he held until his retirement in 1995. He was an active supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Mr. Caldwell is survived by his wife Susan Havens Caldwell of Norman; by his brother David Sherlock Caldwell of Kalamazoo, Michigan; by his daughter Margaret Elizabeth Caldwell of Frederick, Colorado, and son Peter Charles Caldwell of Houston, Texas; two granddaughters, Natalie Jane Mesander of Frederick and Vera Rebecca Margaret Caldwell of Houston; his daughter-in-law, Lora Wildenthal, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
