Sara Barbara Haraway

Sara Barbara Darby Haraway died July 12, 2019. She was born January 14, 1932 in the community of Sugartree in Carroll County Missouri to John W. and Vallie E. Darby. She attended elementary and high school in Carrolton, Missouri and received a B.S. in Education degree from the University of Missouri. She did postgrad work at Eastern New Mexico University and the College of the Southwest.
After college Sara taught third grade for two years in North Kansas City, Missouri, then left the teaching profession to become secretary to the Chairman of the Pathology Department at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1961 she moved to Hobbs, New Mexico to teach third grade again in the Hobbs Municipal Schools. She married Robert R. “Pepper” Haraway, and they have one son, David D. Haraway of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
After the family moved to Norman, Oklahoma in 1970, Sara was a stay at home mom for a number of years. She then accepted a position at Norman Clinic, Inc. which lasted twenty-two years. After her “retirement” she worked part time five more years at the Pioneer Library System in the business office. Sara was an active member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Norman and enjoyed her work with the alter guild and other church activities. She has also been a volunteer at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, The Mary Abbott House and the Norman Regional Hospital Auxiliary. When her son was in school she was more active in PTA and served as a Health Chairman at Monroe Elementary School. Later she served as Treasurer of the Mom’s Club of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at the University of Oklahoma. She was passionate about genealogy and family history, and she enjoyed learning and sharing family connections.
Sara is survived by her husband, Robert R. Haraway, of the home, son, David, of Tulsa, Oklahoma a brother, Robert Darby of Columbia, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents, John W. and Vallie E. Darby, sisters Helen Pearson, Marjorie Leimkuhler, Joan Jackson, and her brothers John E. Darby, and Karl Darby.
Memorial service will be held at St. Michaels Episcopal Chuch, 1601 W. Imhoff in Norman on Friday July 19, 2019 at 10:00AM. Inurnment will follow in the columbarium at the church.
