1916 – 2011
Bud Gladwell died peacefully January 22, 2011 at Battlefords Union Hospital. He was born in Regina to Charles Victor Sr. and Mary (Rae). Educated first at Regina College and then earning a Bachelor of Accounting at the University of Saskatchewan, he articled with his father’s accounting firm in Regina to become a Chartered Accountant. He then moved to Toronto to work with a large firm. While in Toronto he married Estella (Teddy) Busby, of Regina, then served during the war as comptroller in a ship repair yard in Pictou, Nova Scotia. After the war Bud and Teddy moved to North Battleford, and following a period in the automotive business, he continued his accounting career, eventually retiring as a partner in the firm Beggs, Gladwell and Partners.
During his youth he was a championship rower, and he remained physically very active all his life, board sailing and skiing well into his eighties. His passion for outdoor activity, especially skiing and sailing, led him to become a founding member of the Battleford’s Sailing Club, and of the ski hill at Table Mountain.
He also contributed to his community through the Kinsmen, K-40 and Rotary clubs, on the Board of Stewards of the Third Avenue United Church, the advisory board of CAA Saskatchewan, and on the founding board of River Heights Lodge.
Following the death of Teddy in 1980, he married Mona (Patrick) Smith of Ottawa. Their retirement included many sailing trips in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and both coasts of Canada.
Bud is survived by his sons Brian, of Regina, Ross and wife Diane (Carter) Gladwell, of Pickering, ON, and daughter Marnie, of Regina; grandchildren Tim and Michael (Ross) and Kylie and Nina Sier (Marnie); step-children Heather Maund and husband Ross Maund, of Huntsville, ON and Blair Smith and wife Fran (Sykes) Smith of Airdrie, AB; stepgrandchildren Ryan and Stacey Maund (Heather),and Tracy (Sykes) Mackessy, Jason Sykes, Bryant and Jeff Smith (Blair).
