Joanne Margaret Volland

Joanne was born on October 18, 1936 to Charles (Bud) and Margaret (Zemke) Wade. Her childhood was spent growing up on the family orchard in Naches, WA., just east of Yakima. She graduated from Naches High School in 1954.

Joanne was a member of the Naches Grange for many, many years. She started her employment at the Jones Market in Naches and the Country Store in Yakima for several years after high school and following marriage.

On April 1, 1960 she married Jack L. Volland from Yakima. They had one daughter Susan born Dec 24, 1961.

Jack and Joanne both had a love for top fuel dragsters owning several themselves. They traveled to most of the drag strips up and down the west coast. In 1967 they moved to North Bend, where they built on of the very first houses in Wilderness Rim. Joanne then went to work at the Eastgate Safeway and retired from there after almost 35 years in Nov 1999.

After the death of Susan’s husband, Dennis Johnson, Joanne moved in with Susan, living there until her passing on Monday.

Joanne loved to read, and having lunch with a group of her friends she called “the girls”. Some would meet Tuesdays at Scott’s Dairy Freeze and others on Tuesday & Wednesday evenings at the Cantina of El Caporal. She also loved watching wrestling, basketball and auto racing on tv, and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Joanne is survived by her daughter Susan Johnson of North Bend and grandson Michael Sterkel his wife Jessica of North Bend, along with her step daughters and grandchildren Janine Volland, Shayla Volland & LJ Linton from North Bend & Janet Beusen husband Jelle of Neu-Isenberg, Germany daughter Natasha, and numerous cousins, aunts, and several nieces and nephews.

Her memorial service will be held at the Snoqualmie Valley Funeral Chapel, 1202 Boalch Ave NW, North Bend, WA Monday June 10, 2013 at 2:00 pm. Reception to follow at the Moose Lodge in North Bend. Remembrances can be made in her memory to the American Heart Association, the Diabetes Foundations and the Snoqualmie Valley Youth Sports (HUB).
