Barbara L. Schattle, 84, widow of Lee R. Schattle of Goose Creek passed away on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at her home surrounded by loved ones. Barbara was born November 24, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan. Barbara’s love of cooking drew her to a career in the restaurant hospitality and management industry. She began working at the Charleston AFB Officers’ Club as cook, hostess, and manager before moving on to the Charleston Country Club. She was then asked to manage the Ice House Restaurant located in Downtown Charleston and on Kiawah Island. She trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Chicago briefly before branching out on her own. She opened her own restaurant, Barbalee’s, in Goose Creek during the early 1980’s. She was an avid supporter of her children’s high school athletics and her restaurant supported and served many Goose Creek High School athletes and coaches over the years. After selling her business, she could not bring it upon herself to retire. She continued to work occasionally to help out friends managing their restaurants when called upon.
Barbara was very proud of the role she and her late husband, Lee, played as one of the founding families of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Goose Creek. She was predeceased by her husband, two infant children, James and Susan Schattle, one grandchild, Kevin Borrelli, and son-in-law Richard “Tom” Thomas. She is survived by her six children: Duane Schattle of Norfolk, Virginia; Roxanne Thomas of Goose Creek, SC; Lorri Borrelli (Tom) of Mount Pleasant, Michigan; Donna Browning of Goose Creek, SC; Michael Schattle (Bonnie) of Goose Creek, SC; and Paula Cumbee of Enterprise, Alabama; and eight (8) grandchildren: Bob, Karlee, Jason, Lauren, Darla, Cara, Jessica, Erin, and Kyle along with (6) great grandchildren.
A private ceremony and burial for Barbara will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. at a later date. She will be buried with her husband, Lee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to “Wreaths Across America,” sponsoring a wreath for a veteran’s gravesite during the annual December wreath laying ceremony at Arlington (www.wreathsacrossamerica.org) or any national cemetery of your choice.
