

Bert W. Dangerfield, Jr., 83, of Hanahan, South Carolina, husband of Cindy Louise Gay Dangerfield, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Hospice of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Visitation will be at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC on Tuesday, January 17 between 6pm and 8pm. A brief flag presentation ceremony will be conducted by the Washington Light Infantry at 7pm. His funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 18 at Highland Park Baptist Church, 6211 Murray Dr. Hanahan, SC. Internment will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens. Bert was a lifelong resident of Charleston, born April 9, 1933 in Charleston, SC, son of the late Bert W. Dangerfield, Sr. and Esther Mae Benton Dangerfield. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Daughter Cynthia Dangerfield (Daphne) of Jacksonville, FL, Lisa Barrineau (Barry) of Hanahan, SC, grandchildren Randy Barrineau (Yisi) of Charlotte, NC and Danielle Miller (Kevin) of Greenwood, SC, many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Randy Dangerfield, sisters Ethel Mae Wright and Lois B. Ramsey. He Graduated from North Charleston High School, class of ’51. He worked for the Army National Guard, US Postal Service, Charleston Naval Supply Center (where he served as union president for many years) and the Charleston Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1989 from the Shipyard. He served in the South Carolina Army National Guard, serving with Co B 263rd Tank Bn, and Co B 1 Bn 118 Inf , retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1993. He was one of four remaining active members of the Old Tankers Organization. He was actively involved in sports throughout his life. Playing in many recreational and pickup leagues. He bowled at the Charleston Rifle Club and Sandpiper lanes. He umpired for Dixie Youth baseball where he was once selected as an umpire for the Dixie Youth World Series, High School Baseball and Softball (SCHSL and SCISA), and various recreational and church leagues. He was commissioner of Youth Baseball in the Hanahan/ North Charleston area and coached many teams. He was also a youth football coach for many years. Bert was a member of Ferndale Baptist Church and then Highland Park Baptist Church. He was a member of the Washington Light Infantry. He was Past President and Life Member of the Charleston Rifle Club. He was Director of March of Dimes Bowling Tournament at Charleston Rifle club for 35 years. He was a Board Member of Charleston chapter of The March of Dimes. He was an avid bowler, football and baseball fan. He enjoyed University of South Carolina sports, Washington Redskins football, Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs baseball and especially Hanahan and its sports programs. He attended most sporting and school events for his children and grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Charleston chapter of the March of Dimes.
