She was born on December 15, 1925 on Merritt Island, Florida. After completing Cocoa High School, she graduated with honors from Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Miami, Florida in the Nurses Cadet Program.
She married John Sams La Roche, Jr. March 19, 1949 and began their life together in North Charleston, SC where they raised 3 children. She was a Registered Nurse for Roper Hospital for many years, until Dr. Charles C. Wannamaker persuaded “Ms. La Roche” to work as his nurse. For over 35 years, she was much loved by all their patients.
Betty was active for many years in her beloved, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Park Circle. She was a former senior warden, Eucharistic minister, Episcopal Church Women, and Daughters of the King. She went on several mission trips to the Dominican Republic in her 60’s and 70’s.
After retirement, Betty volunteered faithfully with the Roper Hospital Auxiliary and was an active member of the Pilot Club of Greater Charleston. She loved her cross stitch, playing Bingo, and playing games with her family. She was a SC Stingrays Booster for many years and celebrated her 94th birthday at a game. She loved to travel and visited all but two states.
Betty was the daughter of the late Olive Powers and R. Clark Yates.
She was the loving mother of John S. La Roche, Mary L. Hand (Herb), Frances L. Bennage (Troy) and daughter in love, Shannon La Roche. She was adored by 6 grandchildren and 8 great grand children. She was also the beloved “Aunt Betty Lu” to her extended family. She loved providing a home for “Sunday dinners” to which ALL family and friends were welcomed.
