Carrie "Blanche" Prosser, age 97, of Charleston, SC went home to be with her Lord on Friday morning, February 18, 2022. She was born on July 12, 1924 in Florence, SC. Most who loved her called her “Nana.”
Blanche grew up in a house full of brothers and sisters, most of whom, have predeceased her. Her mother died during childbirth, leaving their father "Mopah" to raise them. Family reunions growing up were always centered around his birthday.
Blanche and her sister, Rosa Lee, married brothers, Harvey Prosser and Zoland Prosser. Zoland and Blanche went on to have two children, Jackie and Kenny. They had 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Zoland worked at the Navy Shipyard, while Blanche was a wife and homemaker.
Zoland and Blanche always had the home where everyone wanted to be. You were always safe, entertained and felt welcomed. Not just for family, but for family friends. A lot of the family friends who frequented their home also called them "Nana" and "Granddaddy." There were yearly Halloween parties with a haunted house, a fishing wall and bobbing for apples. Christmas at their home was always on the evening of Christmas Eve. Most years you would find they had arranged for Santa himself to make an appearance. The one thing you could find year-round at the Prosser home, on any given evening, was a "fish fry" or a gathering to have Zoland's "chicken and rice bog." It was everyone's favorite. The thing that is remembered the most about them was that everyone was always welcome. They had many friends.
Zoland and Blanche lived a very faith-based life. The children and grandchildren were raised to be in church on Sunday morning and evening and Wednesday evenings. And, if there was a revival or some other activity held at the church during the week, they would be there too. They were very involved. Zoland was a deacon and Blanche did lots of volunteer work with the Ladies Auxiliary. Anytime there was a dinner in the Fellowship Hall, you would find Blanche heading it up. She was a wonderful cook.
After the grandchildren were grown, Zoland and Blanche left their home in North Charleston and purchased a condominium at the Ashley House downtown. They both worked the front office there and made many more friends.
Zoland passed away in July of 1997. It was a devastating loss to the family. Everyone was unsure what Blanche would do without him. It was then that she showed her true strength. Although, she missed him terribly, and spoke of him often, she went on to live a very full life with friends and family. She traveled every chance she could. She never said no to a cruise or a road trip. Sadly, her daughter, Jackie, passed away in 2007. It was a devastating loss, but she continued to show the same grace and strength. She continued to live that way, even driving herself to church every Sunday into her late 80’s.
Even after entering assisted living, Blanche continued to have her hair done regularly, as she always had, and was always dressed. She had lots of clothes and shoes and she definitely knew how to accessorize! True to form, she would show up for meals an hour early to socialize with her new friends at the table. She thrived in whatever setting she was in.
Blanche is survived by her son, Kenneth Prosser, her grandchildren, Michael Grier (Julie), Linda Grier Vinneau, Cheryl Grier Johnstone (Yvonne), Christie Prosser Jackson (Rick), and Steve Prosser (Brenda), her great grandchildren, Michael Grier, Jr., Robert Grier, Justin Palarino (Lauren), Lauren Crago (Levi), Amanda Johnstone, Matthew Anderson (Mara), Ashley Jackson and Grant Prosser, her great great grandchild, Jack Anderson, siblings, Edna Venters, Katherine Powell and Harry Joe Gray and many nieces and nephews.
Blanche is preceded in death by her husband, Zoland Lee Prosser, her daughter, Jackie Hailey, her siblings, Valerie Smith, Madeline Dennis, Rose Lee Prosser, Pansy Gray, Billy Gray, John Edward Gray, Carroll Gray and Bobby Gray and her parents, Dargan Z. Gray (Father), Annie L. Gray (Mother) and Tensil Gray (Stepmother).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC. The family will be accepting visitors at 11:00 a.m. and the funeral service will be at noon.
