Christopher C. Merrill, age 67, of North Charleston, SC, passed away on September 8, 2024. Born in Bellows Falls, VT, Christopher was the cherished son of Stanley and Virginia Wylie Merrill.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra “Snooky” Lemen of North Charleston; his brother, Steve Merrill (Cheryl); his sister, Dr. Judy Yancey (Bruce); and his children, Michael Merrill, Laura Ann Merrill, and Virginia “Ginny” L. Merrill. He also leaves behind a loving family of 11 nephews and nieces.
Christopher was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Virginia Merrill, and his sister, Janet Merrill.
Christopher graduated from St. Petersburg Florida High School in 1975, and furthered his education at the University of Georgia on a swimming scholarship, where he earned a degree in physical education. As an alumnus, he was a devoted supporter of the University of Georgia Bulldogs. His passion for the Bulldogs was evident as he always followed their progress with great excitement. Christopher was an avid athlete in his youth. He enjoyed boxing, baseball, football, and swimming. He began swimming competitively at the age of 8 and continued this endeavor through college, receiving numerous medals and accolades. He achieved letterman status as a swimmer at the University of Georgia which complemented his lifelong commitment to the university. His pride in being a Bulldog was a central part of his identity, and he cherished every opportunity to celebrate the university’s victories.
Christopher’s professional journey began with Jefferson Standard in 1979, and he dedicated 44 years to the insurance industry. He held distinguished titles, including Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF). Christopher earned designation as a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) through Bryn Mawr College, which is widely considered to be the most respected insurance designation in the industry. He was a prominent member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) and served on the board of the National Association of Insurance and Finance Advisors. Additionally, he taught insurance pre-licensing courses and made a significant impact on many professionals in the field.
Beyond his career, Christopher was actively involved in his community. He was a dedicated member of the Sertoma Club and contributed to local politics as a former chairman and president of the Charleston Republican Party. His service and commitment to his community were deeply valued.
