August 26, 1970 – July 31, 2026
Darryl Wayne Nelson was born on August 26, 1970, in Jefferson City, Missouri. He was lovingly adopted and raised by Nancy Nelson and Lloyd Nelson, whose love and guidance helped shape the man he would become. He lived and traveled all over the world, but spent his final years in Charleston, South Carolina.
Darryl was a devoted father to his four children, Vivian Nelson, Victoria Nelson, Drake Nelson, and Hunter Nelson. Though he and their mother, Sandra Nelson, later divorced, his love for his children never faded. They were the greatest joy of his life, and he was endlessly proud of each of them.
He was a brother to Ronald Nelson, and his three biological sisters, Heather, Jacquette, and Tawnya, who preceded him in death. He also leaves behind many extended family members, and dear friends.
Throughout his life, Darryl worked many different careers, but one of his greatest passions was managing the family farms that meant so much to him. He also served in the United States Marine Corps before returning home to dedicate himself to his family and the land he loved.
Darryl had an adventurous spirit and found happiness in life's simplest moments. He loved flowers, especially the sweet scent of honeysuckle. He loved cars, music, dancing, traveling, and spending time
outdoors. One of his favorite things was taking long drives with the windows rolled down, feeling the wind on his face while music played. He loved going fast in cars, embracing the excitement of the open road. The beach was one of his happiest places, and some of his children's most treasured memories are watching the sunrise with him before heading out for breakfast together. If there was one thing everyone knew about Darryl (aka Big D), it was that he always had a joke ready.
He loved making people laugh and would get so excited to tell a joke that he could hardly wait to get to the punchline. And if no one laughed, he never minded. He would grin, laugh to himself, and say, “Tough crowd!" Somehow, that always became the funniest part. His laughter was contagious, and he had a gift for making ordinary moments unforgettable.
He was incredibly quick-witted, always armed with the perfect comeback or a playful roast that would leave everyone laughing. He had a sharp sense of humor and a personality that could light up any room.
Many people would have been surprised to discover that Darryl could absolutely bust a move. He loved to dance, used to breakdance, loved to sing, and could even drop into the splits, a talent that never failed to surprise everyone. He wasn't afraid to be goofy, and he loved seeing the people around him smile.
More than anything, Darryl simply loved being with the people he cared about. He didn't need elaborate plans or special occasions. He was happiest just spending time together, even if it was just sitting in the same room. His presence alone made people feel at home.
His family will forever carry with them the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the unconditional love he gave. Though our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in every sunrise over the ocean, every breeze through an open car window, every blooming honeysuckle flower, every song turned up loud, and every joke that ends with a smile.
Darryl's life was not measured by the years he lived, but by the love he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the memories he created.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten
