Diana Wharton Reid left us on October 10, 2023, in South Carolina, leaving behind a legacy of love, and resilience. Diana was born on January 23, 1949, on the beautiful island of Barbados to her loving parents, Mr. Ivan York and Ms. Enid Cheltenham Wharton. Growing up, she was surrounded by family, and though her father had migrated to England, she had the support of many uncles. Preston Cheltenham and Goulbourne York played a vital role in raising her, instilling values that would guide her throughout her life. Diana was one of six siblings, including Sonja, who resides in New York, Marcia Paulette, Yvette, and Hayden, all in Barbados.
Diana’s educational journey led her to St. Leonard’s Secondary Girls’ School in Barbados. Her dedication and determination were evident even in her early years. After completing her education, Diana began her career at Datacraft Electronics in Barbados, where she quickly rose to the position of supervisor, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues.
On Good Friday, 1980, Diana embarked on a new chapter in her life, migrating to the United States of America. She worked for the Sterns family for several years before pursuing her dreams of higher education. She earned her nursing qualifications from Medgar Evers College, opening doors to a fulfilling career as a Med Surg Nurse in the ICU at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. For twenty-three years, she cared for and comforted countless patients, embodying compassion and dedication.
Diana has one biological son, Troy Wharton, who serves in the United States Army. She met and married Lloyd Reid on 24 January 1994. Their union brought together two kindred souls. Coming out of the union with Lloyd, Diana became stepmother to Roel and Anthony Reid, and Margaret Palmer; step-mother-in-law to Coral Reid and step-grandmother to Antonio and Rozzario Reid. Diana was also a loving aunt to Kimar and Lana Clarke, Deidre Ann Cheltenham, many more nieces and nephews, as well as a great-aunt to many.
In 2017, Diana and her family made a significant move; settling in South Carolina after many years in Brooklyn. Everywhere she went, she carried her warmth and kindness, and it was in these new surroundings that she built lasting friendships and found a sense of belonging. In Brooklyn, she attended the Miller Evangelical Christian Union Church, which was pastored by Rev. Boyles Taitt and Pastor Justin Lockhart where she formed deep connections with friends who felt like family. In South Carolina, she continued her spiritual journey at the New Covenant Church of God, pastored by Marc Campbell, Lead Pastor and Harvey Fields, Prayer and Care Pastor, where she forged new bonds and embraced a sense of community.
Diana leaves behind a wide network of family and friends. Among these, her dear friends Terril, Pam, and Jennifer, and her workmates Ms. Spalding and Ms. Bronson, shared a special bond with her, standing as a testament to the lasting connections she formed throughout her life. Special mention is made of those people who were integral in her care; two such people are Roxanne and Sariah.
As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember Diana’s unwavering strength, kindness, and love. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, and in the memories, we hold close to our hearts. Though she may be gone from our sight, her spirit remains in the love and care she brought into this world.
May she rest in peace and rise in glory!
