Elizabeth Jones Johnson was born in Philadelphia on September 11, 1928, a year before The Great Depression began. This was a difficult time for America, and especially Black people. Fortunately, she was born to two strong parents, George, Sr. and Myrtle Jones. They instilled in her and her siblings, Leopold (affectionately called Buddy), Lawrence, George Jr. and Sara, the importance of education and hard work. Elizabeth learned these lessons well, demonstrated by the fact that she worked as a Legal Secretary with one law office in Brooklyn for forty years. As might be expected of someone who lived during the Depression, Elizabeth was extremely frugal. However, unknown to most people, she was also extremely generous. She would never turn her back on someone in need and would loan money knowing she might never be repaid. Elizabeth inculcated her values of the importance of an education in her only son Mark, granddaughter Stephanie Mellott, and her two great grandchildren, Samson and Solomon, all of whom survive her. In the 1980s, Elizabeth and her husband, Marion Johnson, moved to Decatur, Georgia to be near Marion’s family. There, she became focused on volunteer activities, including Meals on Wheels and Reaching Out to Senior Adults in Atlanta. She also dedicated herself to physical fitness which enabled her to win a gold medal in the Atlanta Senior Olympics. Elizabeth was a member of New Life Church in Decatur where she worshipped until she moved to Charleston, South Carolina, and became a member at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Elizabeth was always known to enjoy a good time with friends and family. She will be missed by anyone who spent any time with her. She was one of the last of a generation. As she sadly observed in the last year, “All my buddies are gone.” She has now rejoined her buddies in Glory. Her family and friends are also looking forward to that reunion. There will be a Life Celebration Service On Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 2 pm at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
