Ethel is survived by her devoted husband, John Swygert; her children: Lee Morgan (Leslie), Robin Moody (Gary), and DD Bannigan (Patrick); her daughter-in-law, Gerry Swygert; three cherished grandchildren: Rhett Morgan (Marie), Preston Morgan, and Summer Bannigan; and two great-grandsons, Oliver and Leo Morgan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Pearl Spivey; her beloved son, Brian Swygert; her sister, Eloise Aldous; and her brother, Edward Spivey.
Born on October 1, 1933, in Conway, South Carolina, Ethel was the beloved daughter of Walter Riley Spivey and Pearl Mishoe Spivey. She was a proud graduate of North Charleston High School and went on to build a life centered around love, devotion, and family.
On November 9, 1961, Ethel married the love of her life, John Swygert. Their nearly 64 years together were a beautiful testament to enduring love and commitment. Ethel will be remembered most for the care she showed her family, the pride she took in her home, and her vibrant, spirited personality. Her husband won’t soon forget her beauty and her meticulous attention to detail — especially when it came to keeping a tidy and welcoming home. Time spent at the beach brought her great happiness, and her faith was a guiding light in her life. She was a longtime member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Charleston.
A memorial service to celebrate Ethel’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Drive, Charleston, SC 29407.
