Evelyn was born on May 11, 1954, in Marulas Kawit, Cavite, in the Philippines to Tomas Fami and Jovita Ferrer Gandia.
She graduated from Emiliano Tria Tirona Memorial National High School and attended San Sebastian College in Manilla before she immigrated to the United States in 1981. “Evie,” as she was known by those who loved her, was renowned for her love of her family and friends. A wonderful cook and generous host, Evie enjoyed entertaining people and making sure that her guests’ bellies were full. She was a selfless caretaker throughout her life, most recently taking care of her sister, Maureen, as she battled cancer. Even as she lay in the hospital, Evie wanted to make sure that her nurses were getting something to eat as they cared for her. She will be remembered for her abiding faith in God, her strong values and opinions, and her elegant sense of style. In her retirement, she split her time between Charleston, SC, and the Philippines. In Charleston, she attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and while in the Philippines, she attended Saint Mary Magdalene Church in Kawit.
After finding out that she was sick, Evie was brought to Charleston, SC, after spending 3 years away visiting the Philippines, by her loving daughter, Christine Brown. Evie spent the last days of her life surrounded by the people who loved and cared for her.
Evie will be remembered by her loving daughter Christine Brown (Timothy Whitson) and her cherished granddaughter Kayden Whitson. Evie, the youngest of 10, will be constantly missed by her sisters Purificacion “Aba” Gandia Orcullo, Myrna “May’ Gandia Olaes, and her countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren.
Evie will be resting peacefully with her siblings, Nedicacion "Edie" Gandia Olaes, Anicetas "Chit" Gandia Natalaray, Rustico "Rusty" Gandia, Anarlita "Elite" Gandia Samot, Rodolfo "Tibot" Gandia and Estrella "Tey" Gandia Melo, and most recently, Maureen “Mau” Gandia Flotildes, in heaven.
