George Augustus "GABBY" Hayes, 96, of North Charleston, SC went to be with the Lord, Sunday, August 9, 2020. Gabby was born November 21, 1923 in West Palm Beach, Florida to the late George R. Hayes and Eria Broyles.
Gabby began a long career devoted to helping people in 1943 when he was a Nurses Aid in the “G” Building of King's County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. In 1961 he continued his passion for helping people through his love of music when he became a DJ for WNJR 1430 in Newark, NJ. For a decade those tuning in could hear him say his tagline, " Your dial setting 1430 WNJR, Newark, NJ."
Gabby had other accomplishments in his life; he retired from the New York Transit Authority as a bus driver. His charismatic personality made his passengers enjoy their rides on his routes in Staten Island. After his retirement from the Transit Authority he bought his business, “Gabby’s Dew Dale Record Center" on Richmond Ave. in Staten Island, which was a main shopping area at the time. Once again, his love for music led him to follow his dream of owning his own business.
Gabby was the type of person who could never keep still, proof of this was when he was the welcoming mascot for the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and a Transporter for Ryder Trucking. He was also member of the Masonic Hall and he enjoyed bringing singing groups and bands to the locals so they could dance the night away. Once again, the love of music was his inspiration. He was also know for his quick wit and charming personality.
Gabby was a loving father to, Officer Lichele Tonya Hayes, Pam K. Hayes, Dawn P. Hayes-Allen, also known as "Puddin", Edward Hayling and his two daughters that have gone before him, Cathy L. Hayes and Gail V. Hayes. He was also known as “Daddy" to Barbara Snow-Cottrell aka "Babbs". He is also survived by his sisters; Sherri Gowans and Margaret Stoddard, brother, Willie Manchion, and grandchildren; Andre’ LaMont Hayes, Dane K. West, Stacy G. Ayers, DaVina E. Williams, LaTrice M. Hayes, Andrea Hayes, Ashante Hayes-Daniels, Alexis Hayes-Mordecai, Atasia Hayes, Amir George Hayes-Allen, Theron Hayling and Tashawna Moore. His 19 greatgrandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and many friends that loved him will miss his magnetic personality. He will be joining his family members, and friends who have gone before him and are waiting to welcome him into heaven.
