George Augustus McManus, 84, entered into eternal rest on April 18, 2018, at his Hanahan home after a long illness. Gus is survived by his wife of 61 years, Juanita Haley McManus, their three children, Debra (Furman), Michael, and Randy, his three grandchildren, Tamatha Lynn, George, and Ryan, as well as six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Charleston in 1933, Gus was the youngest son of Charles and Lula McManus, and brother of Calvin, Marie, Louise, James Brantley, and Jeanette.
Gus left school in the 8th grade to work briefly as a sheet metal fabricator. When he came of age, he served in the SC National Guard in Charleston. In 1956, he began working for Rao Electric, which he bought out in 1970 to form M & M Electric. In his retirement years, he purchased and ran a cattle farm in Foreston, SC.
Bream fisherman, dog trainer, bird hunter, and all around Mr. Fix-It, his lifelong attitude of “when it doesn’t work, you have to…” inspired everyone.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston.
A funeral service will be Monday, April 23, 2018 at 10:30 am at First Southern Methodist Church, 1301 Remount Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Cancer Research Institute.
