Dr. Gertrude “Trudy” Morris peacefully passed away on April 16, 2018. She was born in the Township of Danby, MI on Nov. 1, 1934 to Francis and Laura Schwab. She moved to Goose Creek, SC in December 1971 and has lived there for the past 46 years.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Charles “Chuck” Morris, her children, Tim Morris (Cyndee), Jeannie Wierman (John), and Joanie Taylor (Dave), five grandchildren, Brian Morris, Rachel Solomon, Patrick Morris, Kimberly Wierman, and John Michael Wierman, and three great grandchildren, Rylan Morris, Shay Solomon, and Iona Morris.
After raising a family, she fulfilled her academic and professional goals by earning a Ph. D. degree in linguistics from the University of South Carolina in 1993. She was a lifetime learner. She began her professional career teaching English at Bonds Wilson High School in 1973 and then worked as a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) instructor for the Charleston and Berkeley County School Districts until she retired in 2005.
She became an expert in her field, ultimately performing consulting work with the South Carolina Department of Education where she provided statewide training for TESOL teachers. She also travelled to China a number of times to provide professional assistance to Chinese TCSOL/TESOL educators.
After retirement, she and her husband traveled the world visiting 28 countries on 6 different continents. She lived a long, full, healthy life and will be dearly missed.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, April 20, 2018, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue in North Charleston. A private burial will be held at a later date.
