It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of James Dwight Brooks, known to many as Jim or Papa, age 82. Jim passed away on August 31, 2025, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, surrounded by family and friends.
Born on November 28, 1942, in Chester, South Carolina, Jim was the eldest of two children. He grew up in the small town with his loving sister. Jim met his true love, Judith, in high school. They were married after graduation and then Jim answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Navy where he served for 27 years. Judith and Jim had two beloved children and went on to be happily married for 63 years-a union grounded in love, laughter, and mutual respect.
During his military service, Jim was stationed at various posts and was given the opportunity to travel the world. These travels would go on to become the experiences that greatly shaped him as a person. His favorite travel memories consisted of his time with a host family in Italy, living on Guam with his wife and his time in Adak, Alaska with his family. During his career, Master Chief Brooks exemplified the values of loyalty, courage and charisma. By retirement, he was a decorated service member.
During retirement, Jim only further found passion in traveling and also in serving the Lord. He was a long-standing member and deacon of Harbour Lake Baptist Church. As a church member, he made mission trips and was rebaptized in the Jordan River. He also spent countless time with disaster relief and working with AmeriCorps. These memories serving God, are the ones he held close in his devotion to Christ.
Jim will be fondly remembered by his children, grandchildren, sister, and many others whose lives were touched by his presence. Though he is no longer with us, he lives on in our memories with his selflessness, a heart full of love, unconditional kindness, and his jokes with heartfelt laughter. The family has decided on a private service that will be held to honor Jim's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charleston Animal Society, DONATE – Charleston Animal Society. May his soul rest in eternal peace with his loving wife.
"Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die."
- John 11:25-26
