John was born in Lee County, SC on September 22, 1927 to Clarence William Moorer and Christine Plummer Moorer.
John grew up in Pregnall, SC and attended public schools in St George. While in high school, he worked at both the Southern Railway Company and West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in North Charleston. At the age of 16, he received a football scholarship to Clemson College. There he earned three Clemson letters and was president of the Block C Club for all student athletes. John graduated from Clemson in 1948 with a BS degree in Industrial Engineering. At the age of 20, he was employed as principal and head coach at St George High School. He received a Masters Degree in School Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1954. John joined the SC Army National Guard in 1949, where he had a long, distinguished career. He was promoted to Brigadier General upon his military retirement after 42 years of service. He began working at the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in 1954, where he served in the engineering and maintenance departments for 24 years. He was then employed as Director of Buildings and Grounds for the Charleston County School District. John retired at age 60.
After retirement, he and his wife Betty enjoyed sailing for 11 years, followed by camping and traveling to 49 states including Alaska. John was a lifelong Clemson Tiger fan and IPTAY member.
John is survived by his wife Betty and four children. Beth Grooms (John) of Ft. Myers, FL; John Moorer, Jr. (Elaine) of Summerville, SC; Katherine Moorer Jeffcoat (David) of Cincinnati, OH; and James Moorer (Cynthia) of Jacksonville Beach, FL. John was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren: Meredith Chance, Megan Jeffcoat Flanigan (Matthew), Janie Jeffcoat Bauer (Philip), Ashley Grooms, Kaitlyn Moorer Guffey (Jeremiah), Katherine Moorer, Matthew Moorer, Lucas Moorer, Gabriel Moorer, and Summer Moorer and one great-granddaughter, Lucie Katherine Flanigan.
John is also survived by his two sisters, Patricia Kirkland of Columbia, SC and Francis Bath (Cliff) of James Island, SC and his brother Clarence (CW) Moorer, Jr. (Lib) of Columbia, SC.
John is preceded by a brother, Capt. Larry Moorer who was killed in action in Vietnam and a sister, Neva Hartley.
