Larry was born on August 5, 1947, in Charleston, South Carolina, to Dorothy (Dot) Dora Simpson and Arthur Thomas (AT) Driggers. He graduated from North Charleston High School in 1965 and from Newberry College with an accounting degree in 1969. That same year, Larry married the love of his life, Sallie Jane Garvin Driggers, beginning a marriage defined by devotion, service, and joy.
Larry and Sallie built and moved into their first home in Deer Park before settling down at Driggers Lane in 1973, where they raised their three children, Tad, Jacob, and Ramey. Larry began his career at the Charleston Navy Shipyard in June of 1969, where he worked as an accountant for 26 years. He retired in 1995, fondly recognized by his colleagues as “The Auditor Man.”
For more than 50 years, Larry cherished regular trips to the North Carolina mountains, particularly Camp Crestridge and Camp Ridgecrest. He never attended Ridgecrest as a camper, but after Sallie introduced it to him in 1980, he quickly recognized the beauty of its Christ-centered community. Larry spent many summers volunteering in the Ridgecrest mountains, first as the ultimate do-it-all guy and later specializing in opening-day greetings and leading the Maintain the Memories task force. In recent years, anyone dropping off their daughter at Crestridge was welcomed by Larry’s kind smile and familiar words: “Welcome to camp. We are glad you are here.” One of Larry and Sallie’s greatest joys was hosting family and friends at Tad’s Cabin, built in 2017.
Larry and Sallie have been faithful members of Highland Park Baptist Church for 29 years. Larry served his church as a deacon, greeter, concession stand operator, Angel Choir assistant to Sallie, and countless other behind-the-scenes roles, always willing to help wherever needed.
Larry never missed an opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren or support them in their many activities. He especially treasured Sunday dinners with family and watching sports alongside his grandchildren. Larry never passed up a project, especially if it benefited others. This heart for service often meant that his grandchildren, affectionately called his little helpers, were right beside him, lending a hand with smiles on their faces.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Sallie Jane Garvin Driggers; his son, Jacob Garvin Driggers (Isabel); his daughter, Ramey Jane Driggers Schutz; his sister Alivia Stancil (Jerry) and his six grandchildren, Willa, Abbott, & Eva Schutz, and Corbin, Palmer, & Rowan Driggers. Larry was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Abbott (Tad) Driggers.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on February 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Highland Park Baptist Church in Hanahan, South Carolina. Visitation will take place from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.
