Joy will be lovingly remembered by her children: Robert Phillips, Gwen Taylor, Sheila Rudd, and Warren Phillips; grandchildren: Chrystal Benton, Leatrice Ouztes,Mindy Rudd, and Brand Clevinger; 15 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her parents, Alva and Mable Watley; siblings Nettie Lea Watley Holley, James Karl Watley, Lucy Watley Wasson; and granddaughter, Tiffany Rudd.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 3, 1928, to parents Alva Burl Watley and Mable Viola Ramsden, Joy made her home in Charleston, South Carolina to raise her four children. She retired from Sears working as the receiving manager for 35 years and afterward devoted 23 years as a volunteer at Roper Hospital in downtown Charleston.
In addition to traveling around the country, attending gospel concerts, and sailing the seas on various cruises, Joy also enjoyed reading, cooking, and, most of all, dancing. She truly put ‘Joy’ into the holidays by transforming each Christmas and Thanksgiving into a magical time of year through her generosity, love, and devotion to all of her loved ones.
The funeral services will be held on Friday, October 23, at 2 pm, at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashely River Road in Charleston, SC. Flowers can be sent to Live Oak Memorial.
