He graduated from Covington High School in 1953 and enlisted in the Navy.
He served in the Navy and Naval Reserves in Charleston, SC, and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
After the Navy he went to MUSC School of Pharmacy and regretted not finishing but kept his love and interest in medicine.
He began his civil service career at the Naval Supply Center - Charleston SC where he worked for 36 years before retiring. After retiring he began a second career as a medical courier with Quest Diagnostics where he worked for 20 years. He never met a stranger, and if you were on his route you knew you had a friend in Gil. He was always put together and always smelled good. He retired from Quest and spent the remainder of his life at home with his wife and spoiling his grandkids.
Gil grew up in First Christian Church in Virginia. Gil rededicated his life to the church at Brentwood Baptist Church in North Charleston. He was on numerous committees at Brentwood, and after it closed began attending Dorchester Waylyn Baptist Church where he served on committees, as deacon, and Sunday school director. Gil was also a Mason at the Dorchester Masonic Lodge 369.
Gil always loved the beach and taking the kids to the pool. He loved picking tomatoes and delivering them to his friends and to members of the church. His hobbies included yard work, washing cars, and fishing. Being at home with his family was his happy place. Gil hit the jackpot when it came to neighbors. His neighbors on Sabalridge were more like family. You could find him sitting in his lawn chair in the garage keeping tabs on everything.
Gil was preceded in death by his father and mother, Manley H. Hite and Justice Mariam Hite of Covington, VA; his sister and brother-in-law, Charles and Virginia Trimble of Vinton, VA; and great granddaughter, Jamie Pennington of Charleston, SC.
Gil is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Doris “Nita” Hite, and his children Deborah Pennington of Nashville, TN, Angela Rooks (Tom) of Moncks Corner, SC and Tracy Sullivan (Kenneth) of Charleston, SC.
He loved his five grandchildren with all of his heart - Bobby Pennington III (Devon), Ashley Pennington Paternoster (Matthew), Brendan Rooks, Mackenzie Sullivan, and Parker Sullivan. He was blessed with two great grandsons Dylan and Gabriel.
He is also survived by his sister’s children, Stephen and Robin Trimble of Virginia, and many more nieces and nephews.
