Oscar was born in Jefferson City, Tennessee to parents Eugene and Delia Walker Pruitt. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Judy Pruitt, daughter Tonia Gay Pruitt, parents and 9 siblings.
He retired from the United States Navy in December, 1971. A Damage Controlman, his sea duty was primarily on destroyers. The bulk of his career was stationed out of Charleston where he was an instructor for several years at the Naval Training Center.
In 1972, Oscar and his wife, Judy set out on a new career as they created a business in Goose Creek, Berkeley Paint Company. The store came complete with a “trash talking” table, a Pepsi Cola machine with “perfectly’ cold sodas, and an invitation to “come in, sit awhile” and cool off from the heat or just catch up with friends. Oscar and Judy worked together, each having a part in making the store a success for 34 years and then retired at age 75.
Oscar was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church for 52 years having served on the Building and Grounds and many other committees. You knew if he was not at church he was ill, or something was wrong. First and foremost, Oscar loved His Lord. He loved his family, his church family, and friends; was kind and generous to a fault. He was a life-long Atlanta Braves and University of Tennessee fan. He loved NASCAR, fishing and bowling having bowled in a local league for many years.
Oscar’s family loved him dearly and will miss him terribly. He is survived by his daughter, Judy B. Dillow; son-in-law, Kim Dillow; Grandson, Justin P. Dillow and his wife, Jessica; adopted (“the good”) daughter, Shelia Ray; sisters-in-law, Onita Meadows and Jean Brasel; brother-in-law, Dennis Brasel and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) Foundation Vision Fund, 100 Missionary Road, Birmingham, Alabama, 35242 or Hillcrest Baptist Church Memorial Fund to the address above.
