Peggy Jean Powell

Peggy was born on August 17, 1940, in Roan Mountain, TN, in a humble barn house to Fred Cletus and Juanita Hughes Powell. However, Peggy's birth wasn't officially recorded until two days later as August 19, 1940.

She spent her final moments at home, surrounded by family, holding the hand of her lifelong sweetheart, Roy “Opie” Powell. Over the past year, she faced her health challenges with remarkable courage and an indomitable spirit that shone through her mysterious smile. In the face of adversity, Peggy's family stood strong together.

Peggy's niece, Bobbie Baker, traveled from Tennessee to provide her with loving, round-the-clock care, earning the title of "angel" in Peggy's heart. The home nurses who assisted her during her illness also became cherished members of the family, highlighting the love and support that surrounded her.

Throughout her life, Peggy had many passions, from dancing to sewing, but nothing brought her more joy than caring for her family. She had a unique way of welcoming anyone into her heart, making them feel like family. Cooking was her love language, and every meal she prepared was infused with care and affection. No one ever left her home without feeling cherished or with an empty belly.

Later in life, Peggy received the greatest blessing of all—her grandson, Royce. He completed her in a way that words cannot express. Their bond was truly special, and being called "Nanny" brought her immense joy. The two were just like yin and yang. She relished every moment spent with him, especially watching him play baseball. Even as her health declined, Peggy remained a devoted supporter, cheering for Royce and his teammates from the sidelines. She wasn’t only Nanny to Royce, but to all the boys on his team, and loved them all as if they were her own.

Peggy's spirit and love will forever live on in the hearts of her family and of those she touched.

A visitation will be held at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home on October 29, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a chapel memorial service at 6:00 PM.
