Richard Franklin Hegwood Sr., aged 81, of Goose Creek, SC, peacefully departed from this world in the comfort of his home on Friday, January 12, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on January 23, 1942, in Charleston, SC, to the late Oren Dodds Hegwood and Edith Hazel McAlhany Hegwood.
Richard was not just a remarkable individual but a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of his family and countless friends. Having dedicated over 28 years to serving his country in the US Air Force, Richard retired with the rank of SMSGT. His commitment extended beyond retirement, spending an additional seven years at the Navy Brig. Richard's love for sports, including tennis, racquetball, and volleyball, was only surpassed by his enjoyment of playing cards with those he held dear.
Survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Sandra Elizabeth Hegwood, Richard leaves behind a legacy through his daughter, Nancy Hegwood of Rockhill, SC, and his two sons: Richard "Rick" F. Hegwood Jr. (wife, Jonette) of North Charleston, SC, and Kenneth R. Hegwood (wife, Patty) of Goose Creek, SC. His presence will be dearly missed by grandchildren Heather Hegwood, April Hegwood, Ricky Hegwood (wife, Eva), Ian Hegwood (wife, Susie), and great-grandchildren River Hegwood, BayWren and Daxton Hegwood. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Catherine Kemmerer, and Esther Gaskins (husband, Rodney). He is preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Mosier.
A visitation for friends and family will begin at 1:00PM, and will be followed by a celebration of life service at 2:00PM, Wednesday January 17, 2024 at Peace Presbyterian Church located at 174 Londonderry Rd, Goose Creek, SC 29445. The interment will take place thereafter at Carolina Memorial Gardens located at 7113 Rivers Ave. N Charleston, SC 29406.
In honor of Richard Hegwood, the family welcomes floral tributes. Alternatively, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital in his memory.
