Rogelio was born on August 30, 1942, in Nabua, Camarines Sur, Philippines.
He joined the United States Navy as a young recruit in 1964, and continued as a dedicated enlisted man culminating in 21 years of exemplary service in the Armed Forces. As a proud United States citizen, Rogelio Paranal dutifully served his country both on land and by sea including deployments to Vietnam and assignments in the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean aboard his final naval ship USS Sellers. Rogelio also was stationed with his family in San Diego, CA; Agana, Guam; Yokosuka and Yokohama, Japan; Charleston, SC; and Millington, TN.
Rogelio Paranal has been recognized for his military service by receiving several awards during his active duty days including (but not limited to) The National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal & Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal With Bronze Star, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal With Device and Ribbon Bar.
Rogelio retired from the U.S. Navy in 1985, and made his permanent home with his family in Goose Creek, SC. His civilian career included an entrepreneurial venture as a small business owner, along with his wife Rogeria "Ging" Rellora Paranal, as an administrator for Maria's Priority Care Homes I & III residential care facilities in North Charleston, SC.
Rogelio enjoyed a simple yet fulfilling life. He was a very humble, private person. An introvert with his shy, quiet nature he could still be found socializing with many friends and those near and dear to his heart.
Known as a homebody family man, Rogelio would delightfully share with his spouse and two daughters his love of pop music on his reel-to-reel and record players, perfecting the sound levels on his “high tech” equalizer. He was a surprisingly competitive badminton player as was seen in many of the family’s home-grown backyard tournaments, but was always a good sport. He also loved family road trips and long drives, cruising in his beloved 1972 Pontiac Firebird, to music events, theme parks, bowling tournaments, and air shows. He had an infectious laugh, even if he was the only one laughing at his own ‘dad’ jokes.
As an avid gardener, Rogelio took great pleasure in growing the juiciest beefsteak tomatoes and the longest long-pole beans. Just as talented in the kitchen, he was well-known as a wonderful cook and an incredible baker. He also had impeccable handwriting, which may be considered a lost art. When he had any downtime, he found solitude in his relaxing hobby of carpentry.
"Roger", as he was affectionately nicknamed by his friends and colleagues, was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing and caring for him. His pathway on this earth was marked by a strong work ethic, a great sense of adventure, a deep admiration for music and entertainment, and an unwavering steadfast loyalty to his family. He had a committed faith in God, especially as a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
Rogelio was the best example of a decent human being who was always devoted to his family relationships, both in the United States and abroad. He shared his Filipino heritage with pride from growing up in the Bicol Region of the Philippines, especially to pass his knowledge on to his own children, while also participating in Filipino cultural groups in the community, such as the Bicol Association of Charleston, S.C.
Rogelio's passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and to those who had gotten to know him. We ask that you remember him not for the final transition of his life’s journey, but for the life he was able to live in totality.
Rogelio Robianes Paranal is survived by his loving wife, Rogeria "Ging" Rellora Paranal, and daughters Rowena Rellora Paranal and Rechelle Rellora Paranal (husband Chad Higgins).
