Virginia Lucille Ellis, 87, of Goose Creek, SC, passed away peacefully on 21 September 2020 surrounded by family. She was born January, 1933, in Laurens, SC to the late Ellen (Beatrice) Barton and Charlie Reid.
When Virginia’s (Gin’s) children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Gin was an exceptional wife, mother and grandmother. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was a friend to everyone she met.
She single-handedly ran a household of five children while her husband, a Navy man, was frequently out at sea. She loved to sew and was a “natural”- frequently sought out by friends and neighbors in need of her skills. She was also a wonderful cook. Her chicken & dumplings, homemade biscuits, blackberry cobbler and sweet tea were legendary. She also loved flowers and gardening.
Virginia is survived by her daughters Edna Ellis Reid of Columbia, MD, Susan Ellis (Julie Wright and sister Karen Wright) of Goose Creek, Patricia Ellis Rudy (Bryan) of Goose Creek, her son Bob Ellis (Connie) of Goose Creek, and five grandchildren – Kaitlin, Patrick, Lauren, Brandon and Jordan. She was predeceased by her son, Timothy and the love of her life, her husband Virgil.
There will be a Life Well Celebrated Service on Friday, September 25, 2020 1pm. at the Carolina Memorial Mausoleum Chapel located in the back section of the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please send memorials to the Alzheimer’s Family Support Services, the ARK of South Carolina website: thearkofsc.charityproud.org. Condolences may be placed on the funeral home website.
The family would like to thank hospice of Charleston for their love and support.
