Walter Wendell Infinger passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at his home in Charleston, SC where he had been lovingly cared for by his children. He was 99 years of age.
Walter was born on December 15, 1921, in Harleyville, SC, the son of the late Lydia Viola (Canady) and William Marvin Infinger. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1942 and joined the US Army Air Force immediately after graduation. He served during WW II as a radio operator in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and saw action when his base outside London was bombed by the Germans. After the war he went into the civil service for the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he met his future wife, Bacele Virginia Lee. They were married on December 10, 1950 and raised four children at their home in North Charleston. Walter knew how to see the humor in life. Those who knew him will chuckle at the remembrance of his dry and gentle wit. He was a lifelong member of Asbury Memorial Methodist Church, which later became Asbury-St. James United Methodist Church in Charleston. Walter retired in 1978 as Division Director, Southern Division Naval Facilities Engineering and enjoyed many years spending time with his family, traveling and golfing.
Walter was a generous contributor to many charitable organizations including the Star Gospel Mission, the Salvation Army, his alma mater the College of Charleston, and his church where he served in many capacities including the Finance Committee, United Methodist Men, Pastor Parish, and Trustees. He is most noted for his work on the basketball committee where he spent decades helping to manage the church gymnasium and the basketball leagues. Walter always said that of everything in his life, he was proudest of his family.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bacele Lee Infinger, brother Oliver Infinger (Jackie), daughters, Susan Kay Shoemaker (Chuck) and Patricia Infinger, sons Kenneth Ross (Kim) and Eric (Janet), six grandchildren, Lydia Visvader (Otto), Brian, Andrew (Yulia) , Emily, Adam (Sydney), Julie ; great grandson, Carter George; and step great grand children Tanner and Kailyn.
