

W. G. "Bill" Pippin, 90, of North Charleston, husband of Hazel Estelle Norman Pippin, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016 at his residence. Born on June 5, 1926 in Round Oak, Georgia, he was the son of the late Walter Clay Pippin and Pearl Viola Griffin Pippin. Following the steps of his three older brothers, Mr. Pippin enlisted in the U.S. Navy in World War II, serving on the destroyer escort, USS Joseph E. Campbell (DE-70). Following the death of his second brother, Mr. Pippin was transferred to duty at Naval Base Charleston and the USS Umpqua (ATA-209). As a Storekeeper, he met a young lady in the Supply Office. Pleased to know that she was also from Georgia, a whirlwind courtship ensued. Upon his discharge at the end of the War, Bill and Estelle married and made their home in North Charleston. At his death, they were married for 71 years. In 1945, Mr. Pippin began his employment with West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company and retired from MeadWestvaco in 1988 with 43 years of faithful service. He was a member of North Charleston United Methodist Church and a life member of Hammerton Lodge 332. Over the years, he enjoyed restoring his 1923 Model T roadster, gardening, shrimping, spending time with his family and regular visits to his second home in Round Oak, Georgia. Bill and Estelle were the parents of a son, Randall A. "Randy" Pippin of Hanahan, SC and a daughter, Sharon P. Axson and her husband David, of Hanahan, SC. They were blessed with three grandchildren: Angela P. (Stephen) Allen of Barnesville, GA; Bryan A. (Reanna) Pippin of Jonesboro, GA; and William G. (Charise) Axson of Moncks Corner, SC; and seven great-grandchildren: Zachary, Bryce, Gracie, Ariel, Carrigan, Drew and Jonathan. Mr. Pippin was preceded in death by three brothers, Weldon Pippin, Leonard Pippin and Herbert Pippin and two sisters, Louise Maddox Comer and Lillie Crane. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406.
