Wilma Bates Ackerman, age 87, passed away on June 14, 2018. Visitation will be held Wednesday June 20th between 1:00PM- 2:00PM at Carolina Memorial Park Chapel, 7113 Rivers Ave prior to the service and interment both at Carolina Memorial Park.
Mrs. Ackerman was born December 14. 1930 in Gloucester, North Carolina to Alfred Elias “Fred” Bates and Flora Chadwick. She moved with her family to North Charleston in 1940 and became part of the Garco Village Family. She graduated from North Charleston High School in 1947 and attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky.
Mrs. Ackerman enjoyed playing bridge, square dancing and trips to the Great Smoky Mountains. She was on the First Administrative Staff of the newly formed North Charleston Police Department, then located on Jenkins Avenue. She was a longtime member of Cooper River Baptist Church.
Wilma is survived by her two sons, Leonard C. “Len” Evans Jr., and Allen C. Evans, a sister, Inez M. Bates, and two grandchildren, Leonard C. “Lenny” Evans, III, and Erin E. O’Dell.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Alvah F. Ackerman and her step-son, Charles H. Ackerman; two brothers, Kenneth C. Bates and Aubrey E. Bates.
