Ellen was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of a surgeon and the first African-American councilman in that city. Her mother was from a prominent African-American family in Georgia. Ellen graduated from Simmons University and earned her juris doctorate from Howard University. She worked for the federal government. She enjoyed traveling, family genealogy and fashion. She is survived by her grandchildren, Marina and Joshua Jurado.
