Father Augustine Carter

Rev. Augustine Walter CARTER, O.Carm., age 97, of Sun Valley, California passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2021. He was born July 21, 1924, in Los Angeles, California to Walter Joseph Carter and Mary Ellen (O'Connell) Carter.

A Funeral Mass for Rev. Carter will be held Friday, January 21, 2022 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 5011 White Oak Ave, Encino, CA 91316 with visitation at 10:00 AM, the Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM, and a graveside service from 12:00 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 5835 W Slauson Ave, Culver City, CA 90230.

Walter attended Holy Cross Grade School and Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles. He attended Loyola University in Los Angeles, Carroll College in Helena, Montana, and the University of Oregon, where he earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1946. He enlisted and served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946.

Walter entered the Carmelite Order, professing simple vows on September 8, 1947, taking the religious name of Augustine. He was ordained a Carmelite priest in Rome on July 8, 1951. He continued his studies at Loyola University in Los Angeles, earning a MA degree in psychology, and at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, earning a STM degree in spirituality.

Rev. Carter served as a teacher and athletic director at Mount Carmel High School, Los Angeles from 1952-1959. He served as a teacher and principal at Crespi Carmelite High School, Encino, CA from 1959-1966. He returned to Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles from 1966-1973 as principal and teacher, then served as a spiritual director in the Los Angeles area until 1975. Rev. Carter served as a spiritual director at Carmel Retreat in Mahwah, NJ from 1976-1979, returning to California where he served as a spiritual director in Los Angeles and Encino, CA. In 2015 he moved to Vill Scalabrini in Sun Valley, CA where he remained until his death.

Rev. Carter is survived by his brother, Thomas Carter, and by his sisters, Mary Theresa Hartfield and Ellen McDonaough.
