Georgina Hoyos Alonso was born March 25th 1945 in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico.
Daughter of Dr. Jorge Hoyos Estrada and Anna Maria Olivera Sanchez. In 1955, at 10
years old her family brought her to Los Angeles after the passing of her Mother. She attended
Immaculate Heart Elementary and High School. Every summer Gina worked as
a receptionist for her Father’s medical clinic in Lincoln Heights. She received her Bachelors
degree in English and Spanish, with a minor in Mathematics at Cal State Los Angeles.
She furthered her academic career, completing her Masters degree in education
at Pepperdine University. After completing her education as a fully credentialed teacher,
she returned to Lincoln Heights to become a caring teacher at Lincoln High School; becoming
the school’s Girls Dean of Students.
She left her career as an educator in 1989 after the passing of her Father, in management
of her fathers securities. Because of her Background in mathematics, her knowledge
of working with people and the maintenance of assets she found herself in her
next career in work in public causes and philanthropy. Gina was a founding member of
MAPA, MALDEF, and helped Cesar Chavez and the UFW in their historic boycott.
Through this work she developed the skills to help community members and friends to
gain upward mobility. She utilized her resources to help Latino figures in education in
order to empower the communities’s access to education.
Among the Latino leaders in education that she helped included Leticia Quezada, Vikki
Castro, Dr. Zacarias, Yoli Flores and Monica Garcia.
Gina also helped further the careers of such notable political figures as Congress
Woman Royal Alard, Supervisor Gloria Molina, Supervisor Hilda Solis, Congressman
Xavier Becerra, Mayor Antonio Villaregosa, and Mayor Gil Garcetti.
Gina found that the greatest pleasure in giving was to help nonprofit organizations that
serve the needs of children and social causes. Among the special organizations that
she favored include the East Los Angeles Community Youth Center, the Lincoln Heights
Chamber of Commerce; where she served on the Board of Directors for over a decade.
She also helped the organization El Arca, which serves disabled children. In 1986 she
joined Monsignor Moretta and Frank Villalobos, of Barrio Planners to fight against the
Prison in East L.A. She loved and often came to the aid of Resurrection Church. She
was know to love Mariachi Music and joined to helped build the Mariachi Festival at
Resurrection Church.
She left this world August 3, 2020 in Burbank, CA amongst her loved ones.
She is survived by her Daughter Dr. Donna Alonso, a daughter so much like her mother,
and her extended family Mario Campos, his 4 sons and daughters and their 12 grandchildren.
