June 12, 1932 – November 16, 2025
Sheila "Jane" Olson was born in Thorpe Bay, Essex, England and lived there until she was 3, later moving to Hampstead in Northwest London.
When she was 7, World War II broke out. She went to various boarding schools and learned French from the nuns. Jane admits that French was the one thing she was good at in school. She attended the University of Geneva in Switzerland to study languages and was awarded a translator's diploma from the School of Interpreters.
Jane’s first job was secretary in the Strand in London for Mining & Chemical Products Company. When she was 21, she took a freighter from England to California and stopped in Bermuda, Jamaica, and the Panama Canal. A month after arriving in California, Jane took a job with a travel agency in downtown LA. Eight months later, she moved to Hollywood and started working for Max Factor as secretary to the Foreign Advertising Manager.
Later that year, Jane met her future husband, Richard L. Olson, at church. They were married on June 8, 1956. Richard and Jane had four children. When all the children were in school, Jane worked as an assistant to Richard in their State Farm Insurance agency for 25 years until they retired in 1990.
Jane was a very talented knitter and produced beautiful sweaters and baby clothes for the family. She loved entertaining and hosting parties as well as family gatherings and dinners. She was an avid gardener and always preferred working outside rather than inside. Jane was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was a leader in the children's, youth, and women's organizations of the church.
Jane spent many hours making meals for those who were in need and visiting people who were sick, elderly, or lonely. She was a wonderful example of helping and serving others. Jane is survived by her four children, Rachel Bicknell, Derek Olson, Diane Low (Kevin Low), and James Olson; eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. She lived a long, full life and will be greatly missed.
