Joseph E MacDessi

January 1, 1945 - July 13, 2026

Joseph Macdessi embodied the American dream. Born in a small town in Lebanon, he left at a young age to forge his own path and find success in the United States. He arrived almost no money or English speaking skills - but with an overabundance of determination, grit, and intelligence to figure out how to make it. And he did.

He not only built a business and a good life for his family, he also tirelessly supported others in pursuing their dreams, too - whether that was emigrating to the US, helping start businesses, or furthering educations.

Joseph operated his clothing and alterations shop from his home for decades. He opened his garage door inviting the world in - and they came - not just for his services, but for backgammon, snacks, conversation, and tours of his enviable garden. He wore it as a badge of pride when he allowed people to try his fruits and vegetables and saw the realization settle over them that all grocery store produce was crap by comparison.

Joseph was brilliant, competitive, charismatic, and hard working to a fault. He haggled with anyone for anything, regardless of whether or not the setting was appropriate. To his credit though, it always worked. He wore a tough, stubborn, and cantankerous exterior that belied his core which held a kind heart and generous spirit.

Joseph is survived by his adoring daughters, Amanda Macdessi and Melinda Kirkham, along with his grandchildren, Alex Kraft and Callum Joseph Kraft.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 23rd at 8:30am at St. James Syriac Orthodox Church, followed by his burial at 10am at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park.

His life will be celebrated starting at noon on Saturday, July 25th. And we mean CELEBRATED! Dad many times over the years said that he wanted his funeral to be a huge party. We intend to honor his wishes for just that from 3pm - 7pm at his family home in Van Nuys. Food, drinks, games, reminiscing, swimming, and merriment will be available in abundance in Joseph’s honor.
