Zanne Shaw Winship, age 94, left this world on September 1, 2024. Zanne was born on March 2, 1930 to Frances “Vera” Burnet Shaw and Albert D. Shaw, Jr., in Los Angeles. After a wonderful experience at USC, where she became a lifelong Kappa Alpha Theta sister and SC Trojan, she went to Washington, D.C. to work for the Foreign Service.
In 1955 she transferred to the U.S. Embassy to work in Vienna, Austria, where she met the love of her life, Edward “Ted” Winship, Jr., a dashing soldier in the army. She joined Ted as he finished his degree at Amherst in Massachusetts, and then they moved to Southern California with their first child, Carolynn Winship. Edward Winship III and Suzanne “Suki” Winship soon followed; they enjoyed 69 happy years together.
Zanne followed in her mother’s footsteps and worked in movies and tv, notably being a nun in the Sound of Music and working as Angela Lansbury’s stand-in on Murder She Wrote.
Zanne was predeceased by her mother, father, and brother, Geoffrey Shaw, and so many wonderful friends. She is survived by her husband, her children, her granddaughter, Lilly Winship, and niece and nephews Elizabeth Duke Molinski, Robert Duke, as well as Stephen Shaw and Phillip Shaw (and their loving families).
Our dear mother connected with people wherever she went, and her friends became family. “She was the most cheerful person I’ve ever met,” noted a family member. Some of her happiest times included numerous cruises around the world, adventures with her family, and our annual Memorial Day picnic. Zanne adored her dogs, soaking up the sun, and indulging her sweet tooth. She loved going to Seal Beach, chasing great garage sales, and spending time with family and friends
